a day in the life

7:30 AM

You start your day at Wrapped Up Coffee House & Kitchen on Water Street. This cozy downtown café serves handcrafted coffee, fresh-baked goods, and breakfast wraps made with local ingredients. You grab a coffee and a breakfast sandwich and sit by the window overlooking Water Street as the capital city wakes up.

8:30 AM

You head to work at the Maine State House. As a policy analyst for a state agency, your work involves researching legislation, analyzing data, and helping shape programs that serve communities across Maine. The State House campus is walkable from downtown, and working in state government gives you a front-row seat to how policy affects real people.

12:00 PM

For lunch, you walk to Fort Western on the banks of the Kennebec River. The oldest surviving wooden fort in New England, it dates to 1754 and now operates as a museum and event space. You eat your packed lunch on the riverbank, watching kayakers paddle by.

1:00 PM

After lunch, you take a short walk through Capitol Park, a beautifully maintained green space adjacent to the State House. The park has winding paths, mature trees, and monuments — a peaceful spot right in the middle of the city.

5:00 PM

After work, you drive a few minutes to Viles Arboretum, a 224-acre botanical garden and nature preserve on the east side of the Kennebec. The arboretum has over 6 miles of trails through diverse habitats — meadows, wetlands, forests, and gardens. You walk the main loop and enjoy the quiet.

7:00 PM

For dinner, you head to State Lunch on Water Street, a globally inspired gastropub with craft cocktails and views of the Kennebec River. The menu draws from cuisines around the world, and the atmosphere is stylish but relaxed. You order the fish tacos and a house cocktail.

9:00 PM

After dinner, you take a walk along the Kennebec River Rail Trail, which connects Augusta to Hallowell and Gardiner. The paved path follows the river and is popular with walkers, joggers, and cyclists. The evening light on the water is hard to beat.

10:30 PM

Back at home, you reflect on the balance Augusta offers — meaningful work in state government, a growing downtown, easy access to nature, and a cost of living that lets you actually enjoy your life. It’s not flashy, but it’s real.
