a day in the life

7:00 AM:

You start your day at Chimera Coffee on Broad Street in downtown Bangor. This locally owned shop roasts its own blend of Ethiopian and Brazilian beans right across the river in Brewer, and the baristas know the regulars by name. You grab an oat latte and a pastry, settle into one of the mismatched chairs, and check your email before heading to the office.

8:00 AM:

You head to work at Bangor Savings Bank, one of the oldest and most respected financial institutions in Maine. Founded in 1852 and headquartered right here in Bangor, the bank now has 69 branches across Maine and New Hampshire. As a commercial loan officer, your work involves building relationships with local business owners, evaluating loan applications, and helping entrepreneurs and small businesses across the region grow. It’s a career that connects you directly to the economic health of the communities you serve.

12:00 PM:

For lunch, you walk over to Bagel Central on Central Street. They make 18 varieties of bagels fresh daily, plus vegan and gluten-free options. You order your usual — an everything bagel with lox and cream cheese — and eat at one of the tables near the window.

1:00 PM:

After lunch, you take a quick walk along the Penobscot River Walkway. The paved path runs along the river through downtown and connects to several parks. It’s a nice way to clear your head before your afternoon meetings.

3:30 PM:

Back at the office, you spend the afternoon reviewing a loan package for a new restaurant opening in downtown Bangor — part of the city’s growing food scene. You also meet with a longtime client who’s expanding their manufacturing operation in Brewer. The work is relationship-driven and rooted in the community. Bangor Savings invests more than $3.5 million annually into the region through sponsorships, grants, and partnerships, and you see that commitment reflected in how the bank operates day to day.

5:00 PM:

After work, you head to the Bangor City Forest for a run. The 680-acre forest has over 10 miles of trails right within city limits — one of the largest municipal forests in New England. You run a 3-mile loop through the pines and feel the day’s stress melt away.

6:30 PM:

For dinner, you meet friends at the Butcher The Baker on Hammond Street, a locally owned restaurant that took over the beloved Fiddlehead space and serves creative lunch and dinner in a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

8:00 PM:

After dinner, you walk to Penobscot Theatre Company on Main Street to catch a show. The professional theater has been producing plays and musicals in Bangor since 1974, and tonight’s performance is a regional premiere.

9:00 PM:

Back at home, you settle in for the evening. Bangor has the energy and amenities of a small city — a strong financial sector, great restaurants, live theater, a 680-acre forest — but without the congestion or cost. You drift off feeling grateful for a place where your work is tied to the community and the quality of life makes it easy to stay.
