a day in the life
6:30 AM
You start your day early — one of the best parts of living in Bar Harbor is catching sunrise from Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, just a 15-minute drive from your front door. From the summit, you watch the first light in the United States spread across Frenchman Bay and the islands below. It never gets old.
7:30 AM
Back in town, you stop at Coffee Hound on Main Street for a craft latte. The shop has been a Bar Harbor institution since 2013, roasting their own beans at a roastery in Brewer. You grab an Acadian Turtle — mocha, caramel, and hazelnut — and a popover before heading to work.
8:00 AM
You arrive at The Jackson Laboratory, a world-renowned biomedical research institution and one of the largest year-round employers on Mount Desert Island. As a research technician, your work involves supporting genetic studies that contribute to breakthroughs in cancer, diabetes, and other diseases. The lab attracts scientists from around the world, and the work is cutting-edge.
12:00 PM
For lunch, you take advantage of a beautiful day and hike the Bar Island Trail. At low tide, you can walk across the sand bar from Bridge Street to Bar Island — a unique experience that’s practically in your backyard. You eat your packed lunch on the island with views back toward town and the mountains.
1:00 PM
After lunch, you head back to the lab for the afternoon. The collaborative research environment keeps you challenged, and the proximity to Acadia means you can be on a trail within minutes of leaving work.
5:00 PM
After work, you ride the Park Loop Road through Acadia. You stop at Sand Beach for a quick walk along the shore, then continue past Thunder Hole and Otter Cliff. The late afternoon light on the granite coastline is spectacular.
7:00 PM
For dinner, you head to Side Street Café on Rodick Street, a local favorite known for its lobster mac and cheese, craft cocktails, and lively atmosphere. The restaurant draws both locals and visitors, and you run into a few colleagues from the lab.
9:00 PM
After dinner, you walk to the Criterion Theatre on Cottage Street. This beautifully restored art deco theater hosts movies, live music, and community events. Tonight it’s a documentary screening followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker.
10:30 PM
Back at home, you settle in for the night. Bar Harbor is seasonal and tourist-driven, but for those who live here year-round, it offers something rare — world-class natural beauty, meaningful scientific work, and a tight community that comes together when the crowds leave in October.
