a day in the life

7:00 AM:

You start your day with a stop at Moose Alley on Main Street for a breakfast treat and a coffee. The morning light over Rangeley Lake is hard to beat, and you take a moment to enjoy it before heading to work.

8:00 AM:

You head to the office at Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust on Main Street. As a conservation land manager, your work involves stewarding the 120,000+ acres the Trust has conserved across the region — managing sustainable timber harvests, maintaining over 40 miles of public trails, monitoring water quality in the lakes and rivers, and coordinating habitat restoration projects like the Kennebago Headwaters initiative, which aims to protect one of the best wild brook trout waters in the country.

10:00 AM:

This morning you head out for fieldwork. You drive to a recently conserved parcel along the Cupsuptic River to assess a section of trail that needs rerouting after spring runoff. The work takes you through old-growth spruce forest, along a stretch of river where you spot a moose cow and calf drinking on the opposite bank. This is your office.

12:30 PM:

You eat lunch on a granite ledge overlooking the river. The quiet is immense. After eating, you finish your field notes and photograph a few areas that need erosion control before heading back to town.

2:00 PM:

Back at the office, you spend the afternoon updating GIS maps, writing a grant proposal for a watershed monitoring program, and prepping for an upcoming community event. The Trust runs the annual Rangeley Birding Festival, year-round educational programming, and Cupsuptic Lake Park & Campground — all of which connect the community to the land you’re working to protect.

5:00 PM:

After work, you hike Bald Mountain. The short but rewarding climb leads to sweeping views of Rangeley Lake, Mooselookmeguntic Lake, and the surrounding mountains. You’ve done this hike a hundred times and it still takes your breath away at the top.

7:00 PM:

For dinner, you visit Furbish Brew House & Eats on Main Street. Opened in 2019 in a beautifully renovated mansion, Furbish serves wood-fired pizzas, barbecue, lobster rolls, and craft beers brewed on-site. The views of the lake from the patio make it one of the best dinner spots in town.

8:30 PM:

After dinner, you stick around for another beer or walk over to catch live music at one of the other spots along Main Street. Rangeley’s restaurant and bar scene has grown significantly in recent years.

10:00 PM:

Before heading home, you take a peaceful walk along the Rangeley Lake shoreline. The stars out here are spectacular — minimal light pollution means you can see the Milky Way on a clear night.

11:00 PM:

Finally, you return to your home, feeling grateful for the vibrant community and the abundance of outdoor activities that Rangeley offers. As you wind down for the night, you reflect on the fulfilling day you've had and look forward to more exploration and connections in this friendly and adventure-filled city.
