a day in the life

Living in Stonington, Maine, a picturesque fishing village known for its scenic beauty and thriving lobster industry, your day would be filled with coastal charm, outdoor activities, and a strong sense of community. Here's a specific example of what your day might look like:

7:30 AM:

You wake up to the sound of seagulls and lobster boats heading out of the harbor. After getting ready, you head to the Harbor Café, a cozy spot overlooking the working waterfront, for breakfast and a cup of coffee. The haddock chowder is famous, but this early, you stick with eggs and toast.

8:30 AM:

You arrive at your workplace, a local boatyard. As a marine technician, you work on maintaining and repairing boats — both recreational and the commercial lobster boats that are the lifeblood of Stonington’s economy. Your tasks include engine repairs, electrical work, and bottom paint. It’s hands-on work with a purpose.

12:00 PM:

It’s lunchtime, and you take a walk out to Barred Island Preserve on nearby Deer Isle. At low tide, a sandbar connects to the island, and you walk across to eat your packed lunch on the granite ledges with views of Penobscot Bay stretching out in every direction.

1:00 PM:

After lunch, you continue your walk on the preserve trail, winding through forests, marshes, and rocky coastline. You take your time and soak in the quiet before heading back to the yard.

3:00 PM:

Back at the boatyard, you spend the afternoon finishing up a hull repair and helping haul a lobster boat for its annual maintenance. The satisfaction of seeing a boat go back in the water after your work is one of the best parts of the job.

5:30 PM:

As the workday ends, you walk along the Stonington waterfront. You stop by Harbor View Store to grab a drink and sit on the dock, watching the lobster boats come back in with the day’s catch.

7:00 PM:

For dinner, you have a few options. If you want to stay in Stonington, 27 Fathoms Waterfront Grille on Main Street offers seafood and American fare overlooking the harbor. If you want a special-occasion meal, Aragosta — now located at Goose Cove on Deer Isle, about five miles away — is one of the most acclaimed restaurants in Maine, with a tasting menu built entirely around local ingredients.

9:00 PM:

After dinner, you take a walk along the Stonington Fish Pier. The twinkling lights of the fishing boats create a quiet, beautiful scene. You can hear the water lapping against the pilings.

10:00 PM:

Back at home, you settle in with a book or spend time with family. The quietness of Stonington at night is one of its greatest luxuries.
