a day in the life
7:30 AM:
You start your day with coffee at home, looking out at the Sandy River through the kitchen window. Strong is a small town of about 1,200 people in the western Maine foothills, and mornings here are quiet and unhurried.
8:30 AM:
You head to work. The economy in this part of Maine runs on forestry, logging, and the trades. You work for a regional logging company, managing timber harvests on private land across Franklin County. The work is physical, seasonal, and deeply tied to the land. You know these woods like the back of your hand.
12:00 PM:
It’s lunchtime, and you take your break down by the Sandy River. The river runs right through town and is one of the best trout streams in western Maine. You find a spot on the bank, eat your lunch, and watch the water for a while.
1:00 PM:
After lunch, you head back into the woods for the afternoon. The crew is working a stand of spruce and fir on the north side of a ridge, and the fall colors are just starting to come in. It’s hard work, but you can’t beat the office views.
5:00 PM:
After work, you clean up and head into Farmington, about 15 minutes south, to pick up a few things. Farmington is the nearest service center and has grocery stores, restaurants, and the University of Maine at Farmington campus, which brings cultural events and energy to the area.
6:30 PM:
For dinner, you fire up the grill at home or stop at a restaurant in Farmington. The Sandy River region has a handful of good local spots, and Farmington’s Main Street has been growing its food scene in recent years.
8:00 PM:
In the evening, you might attend a community event at the town hall, stop by a neighbor’s place, or just settle in at home with a book. Strong’s social life is small-town in the best sense — people know each other, help each other, and show up when it counts.
10:00 PM:
Before bed, you take a walk along the road. The night sky out here is wide open, and the air smells like pine and woodsmoke. You can hear the river from your yard.
