a day in the life

7:00 AM:

You start your day with coffee on the porch, looking out at the woods and fields that surround your home. Sweden is a town of about 300 people in the foothills of western Maine — no stoplights, no downtown, no chain stores. Just rolling hills, quiet roads, and a deep sense of peace.

8:00 AM:

You head to work. Many Sweden residents commute to nearby Bridgton or the Oxford Hills for work, or work remotely from home. You’re a remote software developer, and your home office has a view of the mountains that most people only get on vacation. The broadband access in this part of western Maine has been improving, making remote work increasingly viable.

12:00 PM:

For lunch, you take a walk on one of the trails near your property. The western Maine foothills are laced with old logging roads and conservation land. You pack a sandwich and eat it sitting on a stone wall that’s been there since the 1800s, listening to nothing but birds.

1:00 PM:

After your break, you return to work and continue your responsibilities at Hancock Lumber. Whether it's operating machinery, managing inventory, or assisting with customer orders, you play an integral role in the lumber production process.

5:00 PM:

As the workday ends, you head to nearby Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton for a hike. The mountain offers well-maintained trails and panoramic views of the lakes region from the summit. It’s a 15-minute drive from your door.

6:30 PM:

Back home, you fire up the grill for dinner. In a town this small, home cooking is the norm. You might use vegetables from your own garden or pick up produce from a farm stand on the way home from your hike. Neighbors sometimes stop by, and dinner becomes an impromptu gathering.

7:30 PM:

In the evening, you might drive into Bridgton for a movie at the Magic Lantern Theater, or stay home and read by the fire. The social life in Sweden centers around neighbors, church suppers, town meetings, and seasonal events — it’s quiet but genuine.

10:00 PM:

You settle in for the night, grateful for the space, the quiet, and the beauty that comes with living in a place where nature is right outside your door. Sweden isn’t for everyone — but for those who want simplicity, privacy, and the real Maine, it’s hard to beat.
