About the region

Bells ring, foghorns blow, and the salty scent of the sea fills the air in the Greater Portland and Casco Bay Region. Fishing is this area’s lifeblood, as you can see from the boats of every size and hue that color its coast.

Inland, you’ll find more academic riches, with school systems that support three high schools that have earned national gold medal status from U.S. News & World Report.

In the city of Portland, the bustling piers of the Old Port hum in an inviting town where quaint cobblestone charm mixes with big city night life. Craft-beer pubs, scores of shops, and renowned restaurants buzz with tourists and locals alike, creating a convivial atmosphere where everyone is welcomed. With a vibrant performing arts scene, world-class theater and art museum, professional baseball games, trolley tours and more, you can easily spend an entire vacation in Portland.

Turn north to find a string of stellar outlet stores in fashionable Freeport, home to Maine’s iconic outfitter, L.L. Bean. Head south to explore the rocky coastline, leading to historic forts and postcard-perfect lighthouses like the Portland Head Light perched atop Cape Elizabeth’s cliffs. Or to really lose yourself, follow its beam to explore the many magical islands of Casco Bay.
