About the region

Maine wouldn’t be Vacationland without the kind of pristine places you’ll find in the Lakes & Mountains region. Whether you like to cast a line, stalk a stag, or set your sites on tamer targets—like a clear slope of fresh-fallen snow—this area has all the prey and powder you’re angling for.

You’ll find it hard to believe that the peaks, rivers and glacial lakes that abound here are so easily accessible from Maine’s largest city. Every season offers a world of adventure, from those long days fly-fishing to the thrill of the hunt when those first leaves start to fall. And when the flakes fly, the Sunday River, Saddleback and Sugarloaf ski resorts offer some of the best skiing and boarding you’ll find anywhere.

When it’s time for a little civilization, there’s a rich cultural heritage to turn to here as well. There’s dishes to dig into at local blueberry festivals, “chowdah” cookoffs, and a thriving arts scene to scope out riverside in the twin cities of Lewiston & Auburn.

Towns & cities:

Bethel | Bridgton & Harrison | Eustis & Stratton | Farmington | Fryeburg | Jay, Livermore & Livermore Falls | Kingfield & Carrabassett Valley | Lewiston & Auburn | Naples | Norway & South Paris | Rangeley Lakes | Rumford & River Valley

The twin cities of Lewiston and Auburn straddle the Androscoggin River, which for decades powered mills along the shore. Some of the mills have now been redeveloped, while a walking path connects the landscaped public parks of the two cities.

I’ve been to Sunday River a couple of times, but only for daytrips, so I’m excited to stay up at the resort for
a full weekend.

Bethel (Summer) »

To set the pace for the weekend ahead, I opt for the slightly loner, scenic drive up Routes 302 and 35, past beautiful Songo Pond in Bethel. Having grown up in the area, I look forward to “coming home” for the weekend.

After a two-hour drive from Portland, “Oh My Gosh” corner is a welcome sight. My husband, Nik, and I make the drive every Friday from December to March, but this is our first summer trip.

Prior to this trip, I’ve been on skis once in 13 years, and my boyfriend, Seth, hasn’t been on a snowboard in about 10. As a kid I used to head to Sunday River every weekend on a school trip. We’re excited to get back out there.

Rangeley »

The choice of destination was ours, so we hit the town of Rangeley with a pack of friends to see what fun we could track down one stormy, snowy, windy weekend up north.

I never imagined that I would be eating fried clam strips and lobster stew mountainside, but here we are. It’s a warm, crunchy, and all- around perfect ending to our Sugarloaf trip.
